Aquino visits evacuation centers in Rizal, Laguna

PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III on Sunday continued to make his round of visits in the areas affected by the massive flooding last week due to monsoon rains.
He first visited the evacuees at Kasiglahan Village Elementary School in Rodriguez, Rizal where he led the distribution of relief goods.
In his speech, the President assured that the government will immediately start the building of dikes around Laguna Lake to prevent future flooding. It is expected to be completed before the end of his term in 2016.
“We will be needing a lot of money and time to make this project possible. The stretch of this dike is almost 100 kilometers. It would take time before we finish constructing this but by building it gradually, we could ease the flooding you are experiencing here,” he said.
Aquino also mentioned the controversial P18.7-billion dredging project by the previous administration in Laguna Lake, which is filled with four million cubic meters of silt every year.
“What the previous government wanted to do was move the mud from one section of the lake to another section. Matter occupies volume and if it occupies the same space, the volume doesn’t decrease,” he said.
The project was cancelled last year.
The President has already ordered Public Works Secretary Rogelio Singson, who also acts as water czar, to present an alternative plan next week.
During his visit, the President also thanked the volunteers from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for repacking the relief goods for some 1,500 families staying in an evacuation center.
President Aquino also visited an evacuation center in Cainta, Rizal. He lauded the local government officials there for being prompt in addressing the flood.
He assured that the national government will implement projects that will mitigate the effects of flooding in Rizal.
The Chief Executive told Rizal residents the danger of building houses near rivers where they could block the flow of water to tributaries.
In Mabitac, Laguna, the President distributed relief packs to hundreds of families displaced by floods.
From Rizal, the President went to the DSWD’s National Resource Operations Center in Pasay City.
He thanked the volunteers from 23 local and private entities for producing 129,170 food packs for the victims. He also credited the local government and private companies for giving donations.
Since Thursday, the President has been busy visiting areas affected by the flooding.
He went to Valenzuela, Malabon, Caloocan, Marikina and Navotas last Thursday while on Friday he visited the provinces of Bulacan, Pampanga and Tarlac.
