Cases of violence vs women up

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Gender and Development (GAD) here has recorded an increase in the number of cases of battered and abused women received by its Women’s Crisis and Resource Center (WCRC) in Barangay Sindalan.
During the launching of the Women’s Month at City Hall, GAD chief Amy Catacutan said that the cases rose from nil in 2009, when the center was opened, to about 80 in 2010.
Some 48 battered women “healing the wounds” of their respective cases are still housed at WCRC.
“The rise in the cases does not necessarily mean that we have a lot of battered and abused women. It is actually going down now but the rise was due to the information dissemination about WCRC and media reports that such a center has been established by the City Government to assist them. Kaya marami na ang nagpupunta doon to seek for assistance,” Catacutan said.
Catacutan also attributed the identification and resolution of cases to the creation of barangay women’s committees which greatly help in informing women of their rights and about WCRC.
“Our work at WCRC is primarily prevention of abuse against women. We serve as a halfway house where we help those with reported cases go back to their normal life. At the most, they stay at WCRC for about three days until we are able to refer them to the proper institutions for rehabilitation and recovery,” said Catacutan.
She disclosed that the WCRC has the necessary facilities and personnel to handle the cases of women allegedly battered and abused.
“At the center we have psychologists and psychiatrists as well as lawyers who provide free medical and legal assistance. Mostly, ours is after-care [problem solving where we refer them to the City Employment Services Division for jobs and livelihood training,” she said.
The WCRC, she added, is focused on women’s socio, economic and political development for their return to normal life, much that the GAD is mainstreamed with every department of City Hall and the Philippine National Police’s Women’s Desk.
“Women now feel safer because they know they have a place to run to for help regarding their respective cases. And the WCRC is open all the time to assist them,” concluded Catacutan.(Jovi T. De Leon)
