CHD-3 trains doctors, nurses on animal bite management
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–To capacitate health workers with the necessary knowledge and skills in the management of rabies exposure, the health department, through the Rabies Prevention and Control Program (RPCP), recently facilitated a three-day training for doctors and nurses deployed in Animal Bite Treatment Centers (ABTCs) in the region.
Held at Central Park Hotel in Hacienda Luisita, Tarlac City, the training on management of rabies exposure and animal bites is part of the Center for Health Development 3 (CHD 3)’s thrust to intensify prevention and control and eliminate the recorded number of human deaths.
“For the past years, region 3 is among the top five regions with high incidence of human rabies in the country. Despite the existence of ABTCs, records show that 90 percent of human deaths did not receive vaccination,” RPCP regional coordinator Dr. Rhodora Cruz explained.
This, according to Cruz may imply that persons exposed to rabies may have difficulty accessing the services of the ABTCs, resulting delay or lack of prophylactic treatment.
During the training, the present status of the National Rabies Prevention and Control Program was discussed with the participants.
The facilitators oriented them on the management of animal rabies based on the Department of Health (DOH) Administrative Order (AO) 2007-s.0029 (Revised Guidelines on Management of Animal Bite Patients, AO 2009-s.0027 (Amendment to AO 2007-0029 Regarding the Revised Guidelines on Management of Animal Bite Patients) and AO 2011-s.0002 (Guidelines for Managing Rabies Exposures Secondary to Bites by Vaccinated Dogs and Cats).
Through the lectures, round-table discussions and video presentations, the facilitators believe that the participants have developed their skills in administration of Rabies Immune Globulin (RIG) and improved their proficiency in administration of Intradermal (ID) administration of tissue culture vaccines.
“To date, there are 29 government owned ABTCs in the region: 3 in the province of Aurora, 1 in Bataan, 7 in Bulacan, 5 in Nueva Ecija, 6 in Pampanga, 1 in Tarlac, 4 in Zambales, 1 in Angeles City and Olongapo City. An ABTC is defined as a healthy facility which provides treatment to victims of bite by animals susceptible to rabies such as dogs, cats, livestock, monkeys and other wild animals,” Cruz stated.
