City College to rise at Heroes’ grounds
April 16, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Mayor Oscar Rodriguez announced Thursday that soon before classes start for next semester, a “three-storey City College will rise here.”
He said the all-free City College will be built at the back of Heroes Hall and Heroes Park.
Rodriguez’s disclosure puts an end to question as to where the City College will be transferred from its temporary campus at Pampanga High School.
Recently, the Commission on Higher Education called the City Government’s attention on an agreement that the college has to be moved to its own campus in two years.
A couple of sites have been considered by the City Council, until Rodriguez revealed Heroes grounds will be home to the City College where hundreds of scholars are bound to finish their tertiary schooling, mainly from scholarship grants.
He said the City Government has spent more than P200 million to bring education to the Fernandino grassroots.
Thursday saw the granting of Scholarship in Education for Empowerment and Development (Seed) assistance to some 704 students from cluster 6 [Del Pilar, Northville and San Pedro] and 775 from cluster 8 encompassing San Agustin, San Felipe and San Jose.
Since March 23 this year, the eight clusters — 450 from cluster 1, 829 from cluster 2, 923 from cluster 3, 842 from cluster 4, 898 from cluster 5 — and the rest of grantees from the city’s 35 barangays have received their grants.
According to Community Affairs Division chief Donny Sayre, the scholarships are a mix of secondary and tertiary grants.
In his remarks, Rodriguez challenged the scholars to stay focused, maintain the required average of 85 percent and foremost, to keep on struggling.
“Sayang kung mawawala sa inyo ito. Be humble, responsible and disciplined. Don’t’ thank us but please thank our tax payers who shoulder your education because one-third of the City Government’s budget goes to you. You are the picture of your future. Panatilihan ninyo ang pagiging tatak Fernandino scholar,” Rodriguez said.
