City hospital receives medical equipment

February 13, 2011
ANGELES CITY — Hospital equipment donated by an international medical assistance organization arrived Wednesday at the Rafael Lazatin Memorial Medical Center (RLMMC).

Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan inspected the hospital equipment and medical supplies after they were unloaded from a 40-foot container van.

The equipment includes nine dialysis machines, which are part of the donations from the US-based World Medical Relief Inc. (WMRI).

The hospital equipments were shipped from Michigan, USA, to the Philippines through the help of the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce (FCCC) based in this city.

The P1.5-million shipping fee was shouldered by the business group.

“We are glad that finally these donations are already here at RLMMC. We can now start replacing some antiquated equipment of our city hospital,” Pamintuan said.

He said the WMRI has been helping the city since 1991, when it was devastated by the Mt. Pinatubo eruption.

He said 80 percent of the hospital equipment at the city hospital came from WMRI.

Aside from the dialysis machines, the first batch of medical equipment also include a C-Arm X-ray machine, a cardiac monitoring machine, an ultrasound machine, reverse-osmosis machine for dialysis system, defibrillator and a phaco-machine worth P14 million.

A phaco-machine is one of the newest equipments used for cataract surgery.

Dialysis chairs, hospital beds and mattress, walkers, crutches and medical supplies such as gauze sponges and under pads, among others, were also turned over to the hospital.

Pamintuan said the construction of the P2.4-million city dialysis center has already started.

“We expect it to be completed by April and as soon as the dialysis machines are installed and tested, then we will start servicing clients who are suffering from kidney or renal failure,” the mayor said.

He said a patient undergoing a dialysis treatment spends around P5,000 to P7,500 per week and another P2,800 for the dialysis filter.

“We’re studying how we can better help patients by cutting on the prices of dialysis treatment. If the patient will be certified as an indigent, we’ll work on giving the treatment for free,” Pamintuan added.

The FCCC funded the construction of the dialysis center, which will be equipped with a generator to ensure continuous operation during dialysis treatment in case of electric power interruption. (Reynaldo G. Navales)
