City’s anti-poverty efforts paying off
March 11, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Mayor Oscar Rodriguez said Fernandinos could expect more services even as the city has been “excluded” in the 4Ps or Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program.
The city was excluded in the project after Rodriguez noted that there is a clear indication that his administration’s anti-poverty efforts are starting to pay off.
Rodriguez, president of the League of Cities of the Philippines, revealed that the City Government will continue to launch more programs that will further uplift the living conditions of the Fernandinos in spite of having a high percentage of middle-class families in the city.
He bared this after attending the signing of the 4Ps Memorandum of Agreement held at Malacañang recently.
The 4Ps aims to reduce poverty by providing conditional cash to extremely poor households to improve their health, nutrition, and education, particularly for children aged 0 to 14.
In a citywide household level survey conducted by the University of the Assumption in 2010, it was reported that the city has the highest number of middle-class families in the whole country, totaling to 59.1 percent, which is definitely higher than the national average of 19 percent.
Results also showed that the number of poor Fernandino families in the city is only 31.3 percent, lower than the national average of 70 percent and showed that the city has the lowest number of families in the poorest of the poor category at only 1.1 percent.
He added that the City Government has already been extending support to the marginalized sectors through the city’s Social Welfare Development Office.
Among these programs include Aid to Individual in Crisis Situation (AICS), where it provides financial assistance for both medical and burial needs among poor citizens, which benefitted more than 8,000 families just last year alone.
The city also provides entrepreneurship opportunities to 100 Fernandinos through Self-Employment Assistance-Kaunlaran (SEA-K). Qualified beneficiaries may get P5,000 for their business.
Recently, the Food for Work program was also launched in some barangays of the city.
“We are now closer to achieving our goal of making the City of San Fernando a habitat of human excellence and we will not stop unless we provide the Fernandinos their right place under the sun,” said Rodriguez.(Jovi T. De Leon)
