Clark most feasible as NAIA alternative

CLARK FREEPORT — A study shows that Clark is the most feasible place where an alternative airport next to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) should be located.
Clark International Airport Corporation president Victor Jose I. Luciano said the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (Jica) conducted a feasibility study in six areas where an airport can be located.
Jica presented to the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) recently that with a 70 percent marking, Clark obtained a great margin over five other areas, which include Sangley Point in Cavite, Angat and Obando in Bulacan, Talim Island in Rizal, and Taguig in Metro Manila.
Luciano bared the result of the study during the launching of the new airport terminal in Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA), which is equipped with two passenger bridges.
The DOTC is planning to operate a twin airport system, where the DMIA and NAIA will be interconnected.
DMIA Terminal 1 has a capacity of 2.5 million passengers annually, but Luciano said the terminal can no longer accommodate a big volume of passengers by the end of this year.
“Maliit na ito by the end of this year. Gagawa tayong bagong terminal,” Luciano said.
He said the government needs the help of the private sector to implement the expansion program for the airport.
Many foreign and local investors have already signified their intention to build a bigger terminal for Clark.
The full operation of DMIA will boost the local employment and the economy, Luciano said. (Reynaldo G. Navales)
