Mâconnais wines were traditionally associated with simplicity and value rather than excellence, but close to the Beaujolais border is a pocket of white wine-growing with distinction of a differ¬ent order. After a period of stagnation in the 1980s, the appellation is now in flux, and flowing quite noticeably in the right direction. The most obvious catalyst was the miniature Domaine Guffens-Heynen of Vergisson, run by the wine¬making firebrand Jean-Marie Guffens and his talented vine-grower wife. The previous leader of Pouilly-Fuissé, Chateau de Fuisse, has had to raise its game, but now this area can boast a host of over-achievers.
The recent cycle of popularity, lassitude, and recovery here provides a universal lesson. ln the 1980s few wines were more fashionable, especially in the USA, than the virtually unpro¬nounceable “Pwee-Fwee-say”. As a result producers grew complacent and sold all manner of heavily sulphured, tart, thin whites under this name, at robust prices. By the early 1990s they found themselves with cellars full of unwanted wine. Hence today’s welcome quality revolution.
