Councilors’ league mourns death of colleague

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Philippine Councilors’ League (PCL) in Pampanga expressed grief over the death of Arayat Councilor Francisco “Jun” Balagtas Jr.
In a statement sent to Sun.Star Pampanga, PCL president and City of San Fernando Councilor Dein Henson said the league mourns for the untimely loss of Balagtas
“(The league) mourns the untimely loss of a service-oriented leader and principled man,” Henson said.
Balagtas, incumbent councilor of Barangay Plazang Luma, was gunned down around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday last week by still unidentified gunmen.
Local police said Balagtas came out of the Patio De Sta. Lucia RestoBar after attending a Municipal Council session and had just boarded his car, when two gunmen on a motorcycle with no license plate bombarded the councilor’s vehicle with bullets.
Meanwhile, Henson has also extended their condolences to the slain councilor’s family and the people of Arayat. The young councilor has also visited Balagtas’ wake last week along with Governor Lilia Pineda and other provincial officials.
“We will see to it that his family will receive assistance and death benefits from our league,” Henson said.
A death benefit of P20,000 from the PCL national office and a counterpart amount from the provincial league will be given to the family.
Henson also condemned the killing of Balagtas and joined the call for justice and speedy resolution of the case.
“We also would like to encourage fellow councilors and other officials to be more vigilant and to take extra precaution in our daily activities and endeavors,” Henson said.
Earlier, Mayor Luisito Espino has called Balagtas’ killing “senseless.” He has also ordered the local police to create a task force to identify and go after the killers of Balagtas. (Charlene Cayabyab)
