Damaged slope an ’emergency project’
SAN SIMON – The local government unit here has declared the damaged slope in Barangay San Jose as an emergency project, as it may possibly endanger the residents’ lives.
Mayor Leonora Wong claimed that the slope needs to be immediately rehabilitated to save residents, including motorists, from any untoward incident.
Wong said the rehabilitation of the San Jose slope is an emergency as it involves the safety of her constituents. “Maituturing natin itong emergency project kasi ang kaligtasan at kapakanan ng aking mga nasasakupan ang ating ikinukunsidira dito,” Wong said.
She added that the damaged portion had triggered accidents involving several motorists who are not familiar with its condition.
Recently a tricycle fell down the slope, probably because the driver didn’t notice the part of the slope that had collapsed.
The big problem is that there are houses at the foot of the slope, Wong stressed.
Wong admitted, however, that the local government cannot implement a long-term solution to the problem because of limited resources.
“What we do now is only sandbagging operations and this is merely a temporary solution. When the rainy season comes, the problem would remain,” she lamented.
As this developed, the mayor sought the help of the Provincial Government to put an end to the problem.
Wong narrated that upon learning the condition of the San Jose slope, Gov. Lilia Pineda, immediately vowed to provide financial assistance for the project.
The project will now be jointly implemented by the Municipal Government and the Provincial Government at the cost of P7.5 million. (Herbert P. Mapiles)
