Develop Clark airport now – Romero

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PamCham) vice chairman Rene Romero urged the administration of President Benigno Aquino III to start the full development of the Clark International Airport Corporation (CIAC) after it was named by London-based Financial Times Business Group as third best among airport zones in the world.
“It is high time that should give full attention to CIAC and name it as one of the main gateways of the country. Full development funding and a long term development plan to open the airport to bigger flights and investment,” Romero said.

Romero added that the recognition brings CIAC into the attention of the international business radar.
CIAC shares the posts with Dubai Airport Free Zone and Morocco’s Tanger Free Zone ranked as first and second place, respectively.
The Financial Times Business Group is the publisher of the Foreign Direct Investment (FDi) Magazine that facilitated the survey.
FDi Magazine is said to have invited 600 free zones from 120 countries to participate in a survey where respondents submitted data about their free zones.
Romero said the recognition is an affirmation of the potentials of the airport in terms of expansion and its runway.
He added that the recognition should be a wake-up call for government to seriously consider making CIAC as the main gateway of the country.
“After NAIA was allegedly dubbed as among the worst airports in the world, now we have something to be proud of. This we owe to the good men and women of CIAC led by President Victor Jose Luciano,” Romero said.
Businessmen here have expressed concern over the seemingly lack of enthusiasm to seriously develop CIAC.
Romero, for one, criticized the lack of official pronouncement in Aquino’s recent State of the Nation Address on the development of the airport.
“We are appealing to the hearts of our leaders to seriously exert effort for the full development of CIAC so that Central Luzon region will fully benefit from its potentials,” Romero said.
Earlier this year, president Victor Jose Luciano said they are pushing for the construction of a budget terminal here that will handle about 10 million passengers a year at the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA).
The new facility, amounting to P12 billion, will take three years to complete and make DMIA the second largest airport in the country, next to Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
