Fishpond operators seek assistance
February 7, 2011
CANDABA – A group of fishpond operators here is asking for technical and financial assistance from local government officials to save the dying tilapia industry in this town.
This came amid an earlier admission made by Mayor Jerry Pelayo that the tilapia industry here is already dying due to water pollution at the Pampanga River, which serves as the main source for fishponds.
It was learned that several hundreds of hectares originally dedicated to the tilapia industry were already converted into farming grounds.
“Wala kaming magawa kundi ang gamitin muna ang mga fishponds namin para sa pagtatanim ng palay kaysa naman malugi ulit sa pagti-tilapia,” one of the operators stated.
The group claimed that 80 percent of fish owners have stopped operating because of losses.
As this developed, they are seeking the immediate intervention of concerned government officials and agencies for an outright solution to the problem.
They also pointed that the municipal government can also help in giving free fingerlings to the affected fishpond operators.
