Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru Wine
Gevrey Chambertin’s Grand Cru vineyards number nine in total, each one with its own distinct appellation; there is no Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru appellation as such. The surface area covered by these climats is close to 220 acres (89 hectares), more than any other village in the Cote d’Or (Chablis is the Burgundian commune with the greatest Grand Cru surface area, with over 247 acres/100 hectares). In terms of individual Grand Cru appellations, Gevrey-Chambertin’s nine make it the undisputed champion of Burgundy, the nearest contender being Vosne-Romanee with six.

The names of the nine Grand Cru climats which fall within Gevrey-Chambertin’s parish boundaries all contain the word Chambertin. Before any official form of vineyard classification was introduced in Burgundy, Chambertin was a single lieu-dit, the core of which survives now as the Le Chambertin Grand Cru and Chambertin-Clos-de-Beze climats. The vines grown there became so famous for the excellent wine they made that in 1847, the village (then called just Gevrey) appealed to the French king to append the Chambertin name to its own. The council soon followed suit with the names of the vineyards next to Le Chambertin. Such was the prestige of the site that when the classification of Gevrey’s vines was made in 1936, it was an official requirement that Grand Cru candidates be immediately adjacent to Le Chambertin.

The Grand Crus here are located to the south of Gevrey-Chambertin village itself, on the mid-slope of the Cote d’Or, as is the case for all Burgundy Grand Crus except Chablis. They stretch in a belt 0.3 miles (0.5km) wide and 1.2 miles (1.9km) long, between the southern houses of the village and the commune boundary with neighboring Morey-Saint-Denis. Due to their location on the slopes, there is slight terroir variation throughout the sites, meaning that some areas are considered better than others. The higher, marginally steeper Le Chambertin and Chambertin Clos-de-Beze are widely viewed as the finest of the sites, while there are some sections of lower sites such as Chapelle-Chambertin whose Grand Cru status has been questioned by critics over the years.

The soils of these vineyards are well drained and stony, and have a thin layer of pebble-strewn chalky topsoil over a deep rocky base. The percentage of clay reduces higher up the slopes, and has an observable effect on the richness of the corresponding wines. The climate here is of continental type, giving relatively hot, dry summers and cool crisp winters. Particularly in summer, this climate type brings high diurnal temperature variation, which helps to maintain a balance between natural sugars and acidity, essential to the longevity and mouthfeel of these wines.
