Grenache….The Next Big Thing in Wine?
A few years ago Pinot Noir was trust into the public’s consciousness when it comes to wine by a little movie named Sideways. After spending some time with winemakers and having the opportunity to taste some of the outstanding versions of Grenache being produced in California, we may have found the next big thing in wine.
So what is Grenache exactly? To start Grenache is a Spanish grape varietal that although being the most widely planted grape in the world, is hardly known to the average wine drinker in America.
Frankly speaking this grape has been cultivated over the years in a way to maximize output per acre on the farm, without regard to the quality of wine being produced. Luckily though, some producers are starting to change this mindset and have realized that Grenache can create some memorable wines when afforded the same type of care and attention typically reserved for Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon.
Grenache, when produced well can show some of the most unique flavors in wine. It is generally spicy and has an abundance of berry flavors. Interestingly, these flavors tend to profile well with typical American meals such as hamburgers and BBQ. There are a few problems with growing Grenache though, both in terms of the ripening of the fruit and the lack of tannins.
Grenache was originally developed in very warm conditions in Spain, so it does need very warm conditions which limits where it can be grown effectively. It needs not only a warm climate, but because of the general lack of tannins in the wine it is helpful if the night time temperature does not drop very much.
If you’re looking for a Grenache to try today, my best advice is to stick to the Paso Robles or Santa Barbara County producers that have brought the grape back within the United States. Some examples include Herman Story, McPrice Myers and the outstanding Grenache-Syrah-Mourvedre blends being produced all over Paso Robles, especially by wineries like Alta Colina and Denner.
