Health department bans ‘piccolo’

December 30, 2010

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – The health department on Tuesday banned the use of firecracker “piccolo” following the high number of recorded fireworks-related injuries.

Based on the latest Kampanya Kontra Paputok Surveillance, the Department of Health (DOH) found out that 48 percent (162 injuries) of the total 173 fireworks-related injuries were caused by piccolo. The other six were from stray bullets, and five from firecracker powder ingestion.

In Central Luzon alone, at least 15 recorded firework-related injuries were caused by piccolo. The region ranked second to the National Capital Region (NCR) in terms of the highest number of piccolo victims.

The NCR has recorded 80 cases while the Western Visayas had 12 cases.

Of the 162 fireworks injury cases reported, the 1-10 year-old age group, with 140 males, is the most affected. Majority (107/162) were active users or directly handled firecrackers. There were no deaths reported.

The number of stray bullet cases stands at six. The ages of stray bullet victims range from 11 to 29 years old. Five of the injured are males and three of the victims were injured at home. There were no deaths reported.

Fireworks powder ingestion now rose to five from Tuesday’s four. Of the total cases, three were due to piccolo. The age range is from 1 to 44 years, and three of the cases were males. There was one fatality reported.

The leading fireworks causing injuries are piccolo (83), kwitis (15), five star (13), whistle bomb and boga (8), and triangle (7).

“If we do not stop the sale of piccolo, we expect about a thousand casualties or more until January 1,” Health Secretary Enrique Ona said.

“There is still time to remind everybody on the dangers of exploding firecrackers/fireworks. I am calling on parents and caregivers, as well, not to let their children handle piccolo and other seemingly harmless firecrackers. Let us all welcome the New Year without injury,” Ona said.
