Is there such a thing as Vintage Cognac? If so, where can I buy one for a Brandy connoisseur?
Clark Philippines fine dining Yats Restaurant & Wine Bar unveils rare Vintage Cognac, the most expensive Cognac in Asia.
Vintage Cognac is not seen in Philippines Manila or Pampanga Angeles City but recently surfaces in Clark Freeport Zone at Yats Retaurant and wine Bar located inside Mimosa. This expensive Cognac sells for p1.5 Million in the Philippines.
Since Cognac does not age once bottled, what is the point about knowing the vintage year? Well, connoisseurs have it that climate of the year affects the storage and ageing conditions thus imbuing vintage variations to an otherwise constant product.
Those new to Vintage Cognac might wonder about the (deep) color of certain Vintage Cognacs. There are actually two kinds of Vintage Cognacs, your regular Vintage Cognacs – sometimes called Early-landed – and the Jarnac-matured kind. The latter is matured in the Jarnac region of France where drying conditions amplifies oxidation and evaporation. Of course, oxidation deepens the color and evaporation raises the alcohol but some do keep it civilized by topping off with water. Early-landed, so named because they were shipped early to Bristol, England to mature in cask before bottling, enjoy more humid climate hence less oxidation and evaporation.
So how much is a bottle? Php 1,500,000.
Is it genuine we wonder. Everything checks out except for one little piece of the puzzle: Vintage Cognac should have a vintage date and also a bottled date. This one has the vintage date but not a bottled date. But that applies to legally sold Vintage Cognac which didn’t exist until 1989. This one is an 1848 single-vintage blend, in all likelihood a Jarnac. The cork might disclose a little bit more but ultimately the palate will have to tell us everything else.

Let’s start off with one admission. Vintage Cognac did not exist legally that is before 1989. To be more specific, French laws did not allow the sale of vintage cognac until 1989. Staring down on a bottle of 1848 Grand Cognac Fine Champagne (insert) of A. de Luze & fils, one would have to conclude that either somebody broke the law or this ultra luxurious bottle spent the last 160 odd years in private cellars.
With that out of the way, let’s turn to what is the difference between Vintage and ordinary XOs.
As the same suggests, Vintage Cognac is a single-year blend. Even until today, this is a rarity, reasons escape us all.
