Kapampangans call for justice on human rights day
December 11, 2010
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — In observance of the International Day of Human Rights, Pampanga’s civil society groups staged a prayer rally for justice for victims of human rights violation.
“We do not merely celebrate this date as a Human Rights Day, but this is also the date when we commemorate the struggle of the people in asserting their rights against oppression and standing against social injustices,” Aurora Broquil, spokesperson of the Human Rights Defenders of Central Luzon (Defend CL), said.
Broquil pointed out the alarming trending in Central Luzon, with Pampanga having the highest number of recorded human rights violations in terms of extrajudicial killings and forced disappearances.
She said counter-insurgency tactics are being used to justify the violations committed.
The prayer rally on Friday, which started at the San Fernando junction, also called for the stop of a culture of impunity. Families of victims of human rights violations in the province participated in the event.
These distressed families have formed their own group, “Misanmetung queng Hustisya.”
Broquil has appealed for the families of victims to be spared from violations.
She said there is a new trend in Pampanga where it is not just the human rights of the victim that is being violated, but also that of his/her family.
Former governor Eddie Panlilio, also the convener of Defend CL, said issues of human rights violation should be reported.
“Anyone who is concerned about human rights should express what they know because there had been a lot of abuses already,” Panlilio said.
Moreover, human rights lawyer Ricardo Sagmit reiterated that the rights of a person exist from the time of conception.
Sagmit also said human rights is not only limited to a person’s liberty but also to freedom of expression.
Aside from the mass rally in this city, protests were also staged in the neighbor provinces of Zambales and Bataan.
In Zambales, the commemoration started with a forum on human rights violations in Central Luzon, followed by a torch parade from the South Central Elementary School to the town proper.
In Bataan, there was also a forum on human rights violations in the province followed by a Mass in front of the Bataan Provincial Jail. (Charlene Cayabyab)
