Lapid: Wife’s ‘dollar-smuggling’ case up to her lawyer
SENATOR Manuel Lapid’s wife, Marissa, has engaged the services of a lawyer and will submit to US jurisdiction after she was arrested at Las Vegas International Airport on the suspicion of smuggling $50,000.
In a press statement, Lapid said his wife’s arrest on January 15 was “saddening” but that she is ready to answer the charge. “We are still waiting for details from her lawyers and it would be best to wait for information from them,” he said.
According to news reports, Mrs. Lapid was taken into custody by US customs agents over an arrest in November 2011 where authorities found $20,000 hidden in two socks, and $20,000 found in a bag. She reportedly told customs that she only had $10,000 on her.
The US Treasury Department requires “each person who physically transports, mails, or ships, or causes to be physically transported, mailed, shipped or received currency or other monetary instruments in an aggregate amount exceeding $10,000” within the US to declare it to authorities through Customs Form 4790. People taking more than $10,000 into the US, or out of the country, also have to fill out the same form.
“Civil and criminal penalties, including under certain circumstances a fine of not more than $500,000 and imprisonment of not more than five years, are provided for failure to file a report, supply information, and for filing a false or fraudulent report,” Customs Form 4790 reads. It is yet unclear whether Mrs. Lapid falls under those “certain circumstances”. (Jonathan de Santos/Sunnex)
