Lawmaker named state university ‘Godfather’
December 12, 2010
BACOLOR — A grateful Don Honorio Ventura Technological State University (DHVTSU) community on Thursday honored and named third district Rep. Aurelio Gonzales Jr. as their “Godfather” for his efforts to convert the former trade school into a state university.
Gonzales, who attended Thursday’s first anniversary celebration of the conversion Don Honorio Ventura College of Arts and Trades (DHVCAT) into DHVTSU was lauded by university president Enrique Baking for his relentless support for the state university.
Baking pointed out that even after his accomplishment in lobbying for the approval of the conversion, Gonzales is still helping DHVTSU in every way possible. “I am happy that the he has never faltered in his commitment to help us.”
A year ago, Gonzales committed his time and efforts in pursuing House Bill 6319, “An Act Converting DHVCAT into Don Honorio Ventura Technological State University.” The then-president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signed on December 9, 2009, Republic Act 9832, making DHVTSU Pampanga’s first and only state university.
For his part, Gonzales said that a new set of development projects for DHVTSU is under way. He said that he has approved the plan to construct a covered court, road and library for the DHVTSU-Mexico Campus.
Gonzales announced that he has also approved the plan and allocated funds for the construction of the campus’s perimeter fence, saying these infrastructure projects for the satellite campus will make it more conducive for the students to learn and put the new state university at par with the mother campus.
Gonzales added that he will also increase the number of DHVTSU’s scholars. Around 1,000 more scholarship grants will be made available in 2011 to qualified beneficiaries in Pampanga’s Third District.
“I urge the students who are enjoying existing scholarship grants to study hard and finish their schooling for this is the only lasting gift they can give me and their parents,” Gonzales said.
Meanwhile, Baking said that the DHVTSU community is planning to name a building or the DHVTSU-Mexico Campus after Aurelio Gonzales Sr., the representative’s father, as a way of showing their respect and gratitude for the younger Gonzales. (Ian Ocampo Flora)
