Limlingan: New Cities

PAMPANGA now has six cities.
Yes, the province has a total of six cities to boast about now, following the final act of converting Mabalacat town into a component city and the opening of SM City San Fernando.
I was stunned when a neighbor exclaimed that Pampanga now has six cities. According to him, this was due to the birth of Mabalacat City and the 44th SM City shopping mall in the country (the 3rd in the province).
Foremost, I congratulate Mayor Marino “Boking” Morales for his realized dream and fruitful efforts of seeing the town of Mabalacat become a city. I know how he is elated right now and how many his well-wishers are for this success. The first city mayor of Mabalacat has imprinted his legacy into the annals of time.
Mayor Boking is likewise thankful for all those who helped in the transformation process. His gratitude reaches as far as Malacañang, the Senate, the House of Representatives, the Provincial Government of Pampanga, the cities of Angeles and San Fernando and of course the people of Mabalacat.
Despite the bad weather, he is thankful for all the people who trooped to poll places to cast their “Yes” votes. The profuse falling of the rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the people to choose for their town’s transformation.
Despite the low turn-out of voters due to the continuous rains perhaps, the “Yes” votes had their way.
It’s been a while now since Mayor Boking started the move for the conversion. It took some years to finally hold a plebiscite (conducted last Saturday) that finally decided the now city’s conversion from a first class town to a component city. The campaign for the people to vote “Yes” was very successful except for the rains. If not for the said reason, a lot more people were expected to vote “Yes”.
With Mabalacat’s metamorphosis, it will now get a greater share of funds from the national government. It will have better opportunities to raise revenues. More funds mean more projects redounding to the welfare of the people. We expect more and bigger programs and projects for the Mabalaqueños.
Mabalacat has long deserved to become the newest city of Pampanga. It has more than the requirements of the law for the conversion. It is in fact overqualified.
I congratulate Mayor Boking Morales for this achievement of Mabalacat town… I mean Mabalacat City.

Talking about cities, SM Prime Holdings Inc. has finally raised the curtains of its newest mall in the City of San Fernando. SM City San Fernando opened its doors last Friday.
As usual, the mall’s inaugural opening has caused monstrous traffic jams in the narrow streets leading to the said mall, since it is located right in the heart of the city proper. I was there to witness how one can be stuck in traffic for hours, helpless and waiting.
The city government of San Fernando should think and apply further measures to somehow put the flow of traffic in the area at ease. The area where the seven-story mall is located is already congested with vehicles and obstructions even before it opened to the public. The opening of the mall has significantly increased the volume of vehicles going to the said area.
Nevertheless, the opening of yet another mall in San Fernando is an indication of rapid development in the city. The SM Management would not be investing their money if not for the potential gain they can have in their investments.
