AOC Madiran & Health
UK research published in 2006 has identified the naturally occurring antioxidant compound in red wine responsible for the reduction in the risk of coronary heart disease and the lowering of overall mortality in regular, moderate consumers of red wine.

The research also identified that Madiran wines have rarely occurring extremely high concentrations of those antioxidant compounds.

The research project also draws attention to the French census data that identifies the population of the Gers region in the south-west of France having, despite the diet, the greatest longevity in France. This is the French Paradox.

Roger Corder, Professor of Experimental Therapeutics at the William Harvey Research Institute, London has pursued research into cardiovascular function and the links between diabetes and heart disease for 25 years. His recently published research has identified that one particular group of polyphenols, known as polymeric procyanidins, offer the greatest degree of protection to human blood-vessel cells. In simple terms the study showed that;
• Procyanidins support healthy blood pressure levels
• Procyanidins support platelet health and healthy blood clotting to help maintain clear arteries
• Procyanidins offer antioxident protection to help reduce oxidation of the bad LDL cholesterol, thereby supporting arterial health
This is explained more in Dr Lauder’s summary of the research.

At the Wine & Health Symposium in France in April 2007 the medical and science experts discussed these and other research findings regarding wine and health.

Having identified the importance of procyanidins, Professor Corder, his colleague Professor Alan Crozier of the University of Glasgow, and their research team, sought to establish whether wines from any particular regions were especially rich in procyanidins.

It was found the “traditional” wines from two specific regions – in the south west of France and in Sardinia, that were already known to be linked with increased longevity – revealed surprisingly high levels of procyanidins. The levels are generally around 10 times higher than new world wines. This is because traditional wine making techniques are still in use.

After only two weeks of a daily 125ml glass of Madiran wine it is shown there can be positive support for cardiovascular health. We recommend you try our wines, open a bottle and have a glass at least 5 days per week with your meals. Supporting a healthy heart and cardiovascular system is a good strategy as we get older. Heart disease is the biggest killer in New Zealand annually. Along with good exercise and other recognised lifestyle choices like not smoking cigarettes, this is one of the best health decisions you can make. It is suggested that from around 40 years and over this is a good strategy.

A bottle will last several days without deteriorating, in fact the wine will improve over the week, but remember to replace the cork or use a vacuum closure. In summer place in the refrigerator and let your daily glass return to room tempurature before consuming.

Following publication of his research, Professor Corder’s book The Wine Diet was released in early 2007. To see a preview of the book and its wide scope covering the science, health, lifestyle, food and diet.

Madiran wines are quality French wines made by passionate craftsman winemakers. Lifestylewines has the best reviewed wines from the Madiran and the largest range available. As an appellation, Madiran wines are made under the strictest set of laws governing wine making. Many of our winemakers “green harvest” their crops down as low as four bunches per vine, in order to produce concentrated wines.
