Mayor awards scholarships to indigents
December 15, 2010
STA. ANA — Some 130 students here received scholarship grants from Mayor Rommel Concepcion as part of the municipal government’s support program for poor but deserving students who would like to finish their schooling.
Concepcion presented the cash assistance to students and parents of the beneficiaries in front of the municipal hall. Concepcion said that the assistance program has grown in number of beneficiaries for this year as more funding had been allocated by the municipal government.
“We are urging students to be serious in their studies so that the support being given by the municipal government will not be put to waste,” Concepcion said, adding that the parents play vital roles in the discipline and upbringing of their children and in assuring that they finish schooling.
Concepcion reported that the municipal government had already given P1.4 million in cash assistance. He said that scholars for high school are now 123 while those in college are around 436. He said that varying amounts are being given to the beneficiaries depending on their performance and standing in school.
“This is only an assistance program. The bulk of the responsibility still remains with the parents and the students. There must be a concerted effort to bring these youth to school and sustain their educational needs. The municipal government will always be ready to do its part,” Concepcion said.
