Mayor to parents, teachers: Nurture children to excellence

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — “Education and hard work are the keys to success in life. Study hard and you will overcome life’s challenges.”
This message was underlined by Mayor Oscar Rodriguez before an audience of over 500 parents and teachers that assembled at Heroes Hall last weekend (July 21) for the Pampanga High School Parents-Teachers Association (PHA-PTA) Annual Parents Convention.
Citing his own rise from humble beginnings, Mayor Oca said his early education was often financed with small loans that his mother took out from neighbors in a Pampanga town where his father was a farmer.
“If there was one thing that changed my life,” he said, “it was because I went to school and studied hard. I worked hard so that the hardships that my parents went through would not go to waste.”
The mayor recalled early in his first term as top city executive of San Fernando when he decided to secure loans which his administration used in providing for the education of young Fernandinos.
That strategy has helped San Fernando achieve not only the highest number of city scholars but also the largest proportion of children who should be in school who are actually enrolled – 95 percent of the city’s children of school age are now attending school.
The city is now in a better position to offer employable young people with good education to investors, and the result has been a big increase in investments moving into the City of San Fernando, Mayor Oca said.
He added that even if the City Government had incurred debt, the funds have been translated into “investments in our children”.
The next task would be to “nurture your children into excellence” and rise from poverty by “embracing change and learning how to survive, how to be competitive, how to be resilient, and how to excel.”
The mayor also stressed the need for the parents and teachers to get actively involved in their community. “All of you are stakeholders, partners who have a voice on how the affairs of your community are managed.”
“You must make sure that there will still be no corruption and that the coming city officials will continue good governance practices that we have started. Do not put all our good results to waste by electing wrong candidates,” he said.
