Mayor to represent cities league in human trafficking summit

ANGELES CITY — Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan will leave Tuesday for South Korea to represent the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) in the international conference on Anti-Human Trafficking.
Pamintuan said the conference, dubbed “Enhancing Human Security: Developing Local Government Capacities to Combat Child Trafficking in the Asia-Pacific Region,” was organized by Jeju International Training Center (JITC) and will be held from March 30 to April 1 in Jeju, Republic of Korea.
It will feature lecture papers on anti-trafficking initiatives, problems and trends all across the Asia-Pacific region.
The event, he added, will also feature discussions on possible areas of cooperation on a united approach against child trafficking.
“I will be presenting a paper on our initiatives against human trafficking and we also hope that we could learn from the accomplishments of other countries in their efforts against human trafficking,” Pamintuan said.
He is hoping to learn a lot from the conference and “to cascade what we have learned in the local level.”
The mayor also issued earlier numerous memoranda and orders, including Executive Order 13 on July 22, creating the Angeles City Task Force against Human Trafficking.
The city police office was tasked to prepare an operation relative to the objectives of the task force.
City of San Fernando Mayor Oscar Rodriguez, LCP national president, said Pamintuan has the competence and professional experience.
“We see the value of his participation in the conference as this will augur well for his capacity-building and knowledge sharing of Philippine cities’ experience,” Rodriguez said.
Meanwhile, Jeju International Training Center (JITC) is also called Cifal Jeju, which is part of Cifal Network (International Training Center for Local Authorities) of Unitar (United Nations Institute for Training and Research).
The center was established to provide workshops/seminars to help local governments’ capacity-building, especially in the area of “sustainable urbanization and environment” and “human security and safety” in cooperation with Unitar.
