Mayors to develop cities, improve education
January 04, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) is expected to further push for the development of “engines of growth” and contribute to the improvement of the education system in the country this 2011.
LCP president and this city’s Mayor Oscar Rodriguez said their group is determined to help small cities across the country for further development.
He said discussions on how the LCP will assist smaller cities will be part of their general assembly expected to be held in this city on January 6, 7 and 8.
Aside from developing small cities, Rodriguez said the LCP will also work on carrying out the memorandum of agreement they had with the Department of Education (DepEd).
“Our agreement with DepEd is to solve in the nearest possible time the lack of classrooms among our schools,” he said.
Under the DepEd agreement, Rodriguez said the LCP will fund the construction of school buildings in various cities of the country. The fund will be complemented by the education department.
For the upcoming general assembly, Rodriguez said city mayors will also discuss possible amendments to the Local Government Code.
Rodriguez said President Benigno Aquino III welcomes any suggestions and recommendations, especially from serious advocates of good governance. (Charlene Cayabyab)
