Napolcom exams pass rate ‘lowest in history’
THE National Police Commission (Napolcom) said Wednesday the results of last October’s police entrance and promotional examinations will go down as the lowest passing rate in its history.
Local Government Secretary and Napolcom Chairman Jesse Robredo said only 6,874 of the 41,980 examinees managed to pass the entrance and promotional examinations administered last October 23, 2011 in designated schools in Metro Manila and 19 other testing centers nationwide.
Robredo said that in the Philippine National Police (PNP) entrance test, a requirement for initial appointment to the rank of Police Officer 1 (PO1), only 838 (3.97 percent) out of the 21,097 examinees passed, the lowest recorded by the commission since October 23, 2005 wherein the passing rate was 4.80 percent.
Of the 20,883 examinees who took the promotional tests, only 6,036 (12.40 percent) passed, with 3,381 in the Police Officer exam, 2,572 in the Senior Police Officer exam, 41 in the Inspector exam and 42 in the Superintendent exam.
A similar exam administered last April 2011 showed that only 7,750 examinees or 19.91 percent of the 38,918 who took the police entrance and promotion tests passed.
But the official see a silver lining in the exams results, adding it may not have been due to the ability of the examinees but rather to the stringent measures implemented following the controversy that erupted several years ago when several examinees were caught cheating.
Reports of cheating and other irregularities, particularly in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm), have cropped up in the previous police entrance test, prompting the Napolcom to institute additional safeguards to deter such things from taking place again.
“The low passing rate in the entrance exam may be attributed to the commission’s continuous upgrading of standards on its police examinations in line with its sustained effort to professionalize the PNP by ensuring that only the best and most qualified individuals are admitted in the police service,” Robredo said in a statement.
For his part, Napolcom Vice-Chairman and Executive Officer Eduardo U. Escueta said the commission will continue upgrading its standards and its campaign for an improved quality of police service, hence, only the cream of the crop can enter the PNP.
The final list of successful examinees is already posted at the Napolcom central office in Makati City and can be viewed at the Napolcom website at www.napolcom.gov.ph, while individual reports of rating will soon be mailed out to all examinees.
Escueta said verification of test results will be entertained on the second week of February by the Napolcom central office and its regional offices nationwide. (AH/Sunnex)
