No trike fare hike in Angeles: transport office
April 13, 2011
ANGELES CITY – The Public Transportation Regulatory Office (PTRO) has announced that there will be no tricycle fare increases in this city as of the moment.
Passengers complain that some drivers of these three-wheeled vehicles are “overcharging” them.
PTRO head Reny Mariano said his office has not approved any increase in fare rates for tricycles, as there has not been any petition for such increase.
“No one among the local tricycle organizations in the city filed a petition to increase a fare schedule,” he said.
Mariano said a petition for fare rate increase has to be approved first by the City Council before a new fare matrix will be issued.
He said the P20 fare stays for the first four-kilometer distance.
Mariano said drivers cannot demand for additional fare sans the fare matrix.
Meanwhile, the PTRO chief even appealed to the riding public to report “colorum” tricycles to his office.
Colorum refers to tricycles or any public utility vehicle that does not have a franchise to ferry commuters in the city.
Tricycles without a body number or a green plate number and take passengers for a fare are considered colorum.
Mariano said the penalty for drivers without a franchise is P1,000. The owner of the tricycle will also be fined P500 if the vehicle is impounded.
He said that a new motorized tricycle operator’s permit only costs P100 and can be paid to the City Treasurer’s Office.
PTRO has already suspended seven tricycle drivers, whose license were also confiscated by the office.
Tricycle drivers and operators reportedly requesting for fare increase due to the high cost of gasoline and spare parts.
