Non-government group leads medical, bloodletting missions
December 07, 2010
STO. TOMAS — The Kayapan at Pakamal Tamu Sto. Tomas (Kayaptas) capped its 3rd Year Anniversary by spearheading a bloodletting project simultaneously with the second phase of its medical mission for local residents here.
“Ing Dayang Babie Ku, Kasuglung Ning Bie Mu” (The blood that I give will prolong your life) served as the guiding theme of the bloodletting project while the medical mission was dubbed “Masikan a Pamikakatawan, Iyatad Karing Balang Thomasian” (A healthy body, deliver to all Thomasians).
Red Cross Pampanga and Angeles City chapters joined forces in assessing and extracting the blood donated by former Pampanga Governor Ed Panlilio, KASAUP Pampanga volunteers and some Thomasians.
Doctors from Jose B. Lingad Memorial Regional Hospital led by Dr. Ahren Nefulda treated close to 200 hypertensive and diabetic patients from Sto. Niño (Sapa), San Matias, Balangcas and Moras dela Paz of this municipality.
Kayaptas Inc. is a Securities and Exchange Commission-registered — and perhaps the only Sanggunian Bayan-accredited — local civil society in Pampanga. (Kayaptas comes from the Kapampangan root word “aptas,” which means bundle. What bundles the organization together is their common vision and mission for their beloved town and cabalens).
“What is commendable about the twin activities is the synergy and cooperation being shown by different stakeholders all for the benefit of our town mates and fellow Kapampangans as well,” said Kayaptas president Melvin Calalang.
“Our esteemed group has stood [up] to its name as key partner of the Municipal Government of Sto. Tomas in promoting the welfare and common good of its constituents,” he added.
Some ex-seminarians donated anti-hypertensive and other medicines in addition to the drugs and medical supplies that were solicited by Kayaptas from well-meaning individuals. Home-grown nurses and medical technologists likewise volunteered their services as their humble way of bringing back their blessings to their needy cabalens.
“Leaving one’s comfort zone to make others comfortable raises one’s spirits. The smile of a grateful face and the sense of fulfillment that we feel after having done something good for our fellowmen keep us going. Our journey as an organization is very inspiring and truly uplifting,” Irwin Nucum, Kayaptas spokesperson, said.
“Kayaptas is so motivated that we keep on undertaking various programs, activities and advocacies for the interest of our community as concrete expressions of responsible citizenship,” Nucum added.
Barely three months ago, Kayaptas, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Central Pampanga and the Rotary Club of Dolores, conducted the first phase of its medical mission to address the medical needs of town mates from Barangay Poblacion, San Bartolome, San Vicente and Sto. Rosario (Pau).
In the past, it has planted trees in elementary schools, provided relief goods to flood victims, honed political leaders, conducted voters’ education for various sectors and discussed vital issues that confronted their town mates.
“Kayaptas simply served as the link between the needy and the agencies or individuals who are much willing to provide the former’s necessities in life. Each contributed his own time, talent and resources in the meticulous planning and organization of the noble projects just to ensure their success,” Nucum said. (Ian Ocampo Flora)
