Pamintuan welcomes appointment of new poll chair

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Angeles City Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan on Tuesday said he welcomes the appointment of lawyer Sixto Brillantes Jr. as chairman of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
Brillantes was appointed over the weekend by President Benigno Aquino III, replacing former chairman Jose Melo.
“I welcome the appointment by the President of Attorney Sixto Brillantes as Comelec chair. He was my professor at the San Beda Law School, and I have known him as a very intelligent and upright man,” Pamintuan said in a text message to Sun.Star Pampanga.
Pamintuan added that Brillantes’s appointment as Comelec chair “bodes well to the nation’s long desire for free and honest elections, the very foundation on which our democracy rests.”
“It does not matter that Attorney Brillantes is the lawyer of an electoral protest against me by former Mayor [Francis] Blueboy Nepomuceno,” Pamintuan said.
Brillantes is the lawyer of Nepomuceno, whose electoral protest was found sufficient in form and substance last year by the Comelec’s Second Division.
“I respect him (Brillantes) and look up to him so much to doubt his integrity. Further, I am extremely confident about my case,” Pamintuan said while extending his congratulations to his former professor.
