Pampanga archbishop to continue serving people, church

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Archbishop Paciano Aniceto said Monday that he will continue serving the church and its people until Pope Benedict XIII and the Vatican ask him to retire or find a replacement.
The highest prelate of the Archdiocese of San Fernando celebrated his 74th birthday in advance — March 9, his actual natal day falling on Ash Wednesday — at the Mother of Good Counsel Seminary in this city.
“Iyong aming paglilingkod sa simbahan ay isang representasyon ng ating Panginoon, ang Mabuting Pastol, at iyong Canon Law ay may cut-off o iyung term ng obispo at arsobispo. At ako ay nasa ‘departure area’ na ngayon, so ang plano ngayon ay to pursue service since we have a three-year strategic plan at ito ay matatapos tamang-tama when I step down next year, since 75 ang canonical age of retirement ng mga arsobispo,” Aniceto told Sun.Star Pampanga.
But he said it will all depend on the Pope and the Vatican’s decision.
“Iyun ay kung mayroon ka nang kapalit. Kung wala naman ay discretion of the Pope na. But I am ready to give way to a younger bishop,” he added.
Aniceto said his birthday wish is to faithfully remain in the grace of the Lord, his flock and the people.
“My birthday wish is to constantly remain faithful to the grace of the Lord — the Good Shepherd — and be faithful to the flock entrusted to me, the people of San Fernando so together we can build God’s kingdom of justice, peace, unity and authentic human development,” said the pro-life prelate.
