Pampanga clergy’s sexual affairs lands on new book
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Catholic priests in Pampanga are again in the spotlight as a recently published book, “Altar of Secrets: Sex, Politics, and Money in the Philippine Catholic Church” zoomed in on the province’s clergy for their alleged sexual affairs and the alleged failure of parishioners in acting on such issues.
Author Aries Rufo said the issue of sexual affairs and siring of children among priests is common in the Philippines and in some dioceses but “the problem has become the norm rather than the exception, particularly in Pampanga.”
“Kapampangans are known for their deep religiosity, loving and spoiling their priests to a fault,” Rufo said, citing lay leaders who said that the issues where downplayed because “we look up to our religious leaders.”
Rufo, in an interview with Archbishop Emeritus Oscar Cruz, said the nonchalance of Kapampangans may be giving a wrong signal to priests. Rufo cited the case of Fr. Crispin Cadiang who later asked to be discharged from his priestly duties after admitting to siring two children and a complaint against Fr. Jeffrey Maghirang of the Metropolitan Cathedral San Fernando in October 2011.
“This hands-off culture, prevalent in Pampanga, only prodded other priests to violate their celibacy vow. It was like a virus that surreptitiously infected others,” he said.
But San Fernando Archbishop Paciano Aniceto said he had not tolerated erring priests in Pampanga, particularly those who had violated their vows of celibacy and poverty or committed indiscretions.
The author quoted an unnamed Church official as describing the parishioners to have become “desensitized to the real situation.”
Sought for reaction, Aniceto, who oversees the archdiocese with 120 priests, said “every decision is contextual.”
“It involves discernment that builds and promotes a lasting value. This value is both human and divine, [involving] the will of God and the good of the person,” he said. “Its application is tempered by circumstances, relation, time and context.”
Aniceto, however, declined to say how many priests have been suspended, dismissed or reintegrated in his archdiocese.
