PhilHealth registers 1.48 million members in 2010

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) in Central Luzon has registered nearly 1.5 million members and gathered more than P1 billion worth of contributions in 2010.
Grace Mamawal, officer-in-charge of PhilHealth’s Branch A, said her branch now has a total 1,486,293 registered members as of December 2010.
The new membership figure has gathered a total contributions of P1,130,711,723, which is P1.5 million higher than the total contributions in 2009.
PhilHealth Branch A covers the provinces of Pampanga, Tarlac, Bataan and Zambales.
“A huge percentage of our membership base came from the employed sector at 38.21 percent. Out of these figure, 31.28 percent are private employees while the other 6.93 percent are government employees,” Mamawal said during a press conference.
At least 26.50 percent of the total registered members, Mamawal said, are indigents that were enrolled under the health insurance through the government’s sponsorship program.
“The considerable increase in our membership enrollees among indigents can be attributed to the recent availing of local government units (LGU) of the special calamity discount,” Mamawal said.
The special calamity discount provides 50 percent discount to indigents who were not previously enrolled due to limited Internal Revenue Allotment (Ira) of their LGU.
The new PhilHealth membership figure also comprises 20.23 percent of self-employed and voluntary members under the Individually Paying Program.
At least 13.36 percent of the enrollees are overseas Filipino workers, while the remaining 1.71 percent is composed of retirees and pensioners under the Lifetime Membership Program.
Meanwhile, Mamawal said contributions were made through over-the-counter collections and collections from various accredited agencies comprising of bank and non-bank institutions.
“With these nearly 1.5 million members, together with their qualified dependents reflected on our database, I am proud to report that Branch A has already achieved 93 percent of the mandated 2013 target,” Mamawal said.
Under the health agenda of President Benigno Aquino III, the National Government aims to enroll 99 percent of the Filipino population to the PhilHealth program. (Charlene Cayabyab)
