Public told: Save Mother Earth

April 5, 2011

ANGELES CITY — The City Government, through the City Environmental and Natural Resources Office (Cenro), has joined the rest of the country in celebrating Earth Month 2011.

Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan, adopting the theme of the Earth Month 2011 celebration — “Help save Mother Earth, Let’s practice the 3R’s – Re-use, Reduce and Recycle,” called on the public to “help save the Mother Earth.”

Pamintuan said the preservation and sustenance of the environment is one of the advocacies of the City Government as stipulated in his administration’s “Contract with the Angeleños.”

“Angeles’s celebration of Earth Month will be our constant reminder that we are all responsible for the preservation and care of the environment,” the mayor said.

He added that the City Government is committed to supporting various advocacies worldwide that seek to save the planet from further degradation and restore the abundance and purity of nature, “which is essential for our collective survival.”

Pamintuan is hoping that the present and future generations will benefit from the city’s continuing environmental management endeavors.

He said today’s leaders have a moral obligation to elicit the active involvement of the younger generation in environmental initiatives by being staunch advocates themselves.

“After all, as a Native American proverb says, we do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children,” he said.

Carlito Ganzon, Cenro chief, said Angeles City’s Earth Month celebration will include citywide cleaning operations and tree-planting throughout April.

“These activities will assist us in searching for the cleanest and greenest barangay in the city,” Ganzon said.

He added a symposium on solid waste management and proper waste segregation will also be held at the city library this month.

He said that his office recently created two anti-littering teams tasked to conduct massive information drive on the issues of waste segregation and anti-littering.

Meanwhile, almost 1,000 employees of the Provincial Government joined the international celebration of the Earth Day on Monday.

Capitol employees, wearing green shirts, started the celebration with a freedom walk (Alay Lakad) from the Capitol grounds up to V. Tiomico Street at the City of San Fernando proper.

After the freedom walk, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Art Punzalan awarded offices with best practices in waste segregation.

Some of the awardees were the provincial Legal Office, Library, Accounting Office and the Administrator’s Office.

Aside from the freedom walk, Punzalan said Capitol employees will also conduct a clean-up drive and individual tree planting activities
