Rice institute firms up programs for 2011

THE Philippine Rice Research Institute (Philrice) is gearing up to implement its medium- and long-term plans after its Board of Trustees approved its programs for 2011-2016.

Following a series of stakeholders’ consultation-workshops, the country’s lead agency in rice science and development will be busy next year with the implementation of projects that will enable rice to adapt to climate change, increasing yield in the irrigated lowland, developing nutraceutical rice products, and packaging location-specific technologies.

The Philrice said a program focusing on determining the complex interrelationship between the development of rice industry and the national economy is also in place.

Lawyer Ronilo A. Beronio, Philrice executive director, said the programs were created not only to increase farmers’ yield but also to improve farmers’ nutrition and economic status.

The Philrice also said varieties yielding 3-5 t/ha will be developed for environments with drought, salt, flood, heat, cool temperature and low solar radiation.

Philrice breeders are expected to release in 2012 two inbred direct wet-seeded rice varieties with at least 10 t/ha potential yield to further increase rice productivity in irrigated lowland.

Moreover, two hybrid varieties with potential yield of at least 12 t/ha will be released from 2012 to 2014.

“We also want to help lessen the drudgery of farming. With this, the mechanical rice transplanter, precision seeder, combine harvester and reversible airflow dryer will be promoted and commercialized,” Beronio said.(PNA)
