SM Foundation launches ‘Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan’

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–The communal of SM Group of Companies launched its 57th batch of Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan Farmers Training at Barangay Del Rosario here on August 2, 2013.

This livelihood program is spearheaded by SM Foundation, Inc. (SMFI) Assistant Vice President Cristie S. Angeles in partnership with HARBEST Agribusiness Corp., Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Agriculture, City Government of San Fernando, SM Supermarket, SM Savemore and SM City San Fernando Downtown.

Over 120 farmers from hinterland barangays in the city are set to join the upcoming 12 weeks of training. The partners will teach them technical and hands-on training from HarBest Agribusiness Corporation. The farmer-participants will learn new technology on application of fertilizers, soil amendments, and the use of other water-soluble products through an irrigation system. Well-organized use of water, lower toil cost and healthier crops are its benefits.

Angeles said Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan is the best program to help the marginal farmers in the country increase their production.
She also convinced the farmers to avail the program and firmly finish the module until the end so that when they graduate, they will be equipped with the precise and effective way of farming.

Lana O. Erroba, mall manager of SM City San Fernando Downtown, said that she’s very grateful every time SMFI offers a tie-up on their projects. She also believed that it is an opportunity for the mall to participate on this kind of livelihood program as they were helping out people through SM Foundation’s end.

Also present during the program was Mayor Edwin Santiago who gave a very inspirational talk to our farmers.
“Focus more on the agriculture, because if we do have this yields on our turfs or in our own backyards, food wouldn’t be a problem for every one of us here,” Santiago said.

City Councilor Lito Ocampo also joined the launch and as the founder of Green Crusade Movement who brought up his interest in attending the training program for three months.

Ceremonial turnover and transplanting of seeds highlighted the program. It was a fun-planting activity for the guests and participants even under the heat of the sun.

This joint livelihood training program will start on August 7 (Wednesday). They will be meeting with HarBest representative to train them with the support of the City Agriculturist Myrna Manabat and will be back during “the harvesting” after three months.

SM Supermarket will help the farmers on selling their crops by linking them on to their suppliers. Graduation of the farmers shall follow after the harvesting at SM City San Fernando Downtown.

The program ultimately aims to equip farmers with not only modern farming practices for high-value crop farming but also the business aspect of the industry. ●
