Storm signals lowered
MANILA (4th Update, 5:16 p.m.) — The state weather bureau lowered Sunday afternoon the public storm warning signals in the country as Typhoon Ambo (international codename: Mawar) continues to move away from the Philippines.
Fernando Cada, weather forecaster, said Ambo, which intensified into a typhoon Sunday morning, is now at 390 kilometers east northeast of Aparri, Cagayan, packing maximum winds of 120 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 150 kph.
The typhoon continues to move north northeast at 13 kph. It is expected to be at 510 kilometers east northeast of Basco, Batanes by Monday afternoon, 770 kilometers east northeast of the area by Tuesday afternoon, and 1,060 kilometers northeast of Basco by Wednesday afternoon.
But while it is moving away from the country, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has monitored another Low Pressure Area (LPA) at 1,190 east of Southern Mindanao.
Cada said they will continue monitoring the LPA as soon as enters the Philippine Areas of Responsibility.
In the meantime, Pagasa warned fishermen against venturing out into the sea due to bad weather. It said Ambo, although moving away from the country, will continue to bring rains as it is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon.
“Typhoon Ambo is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon that will bring rains over Luzon and Visayas especially the western section which may trigger flashfloods and landslides,” said the weather bureau in its 5 p.m. Sunday bulletin.
The estimated rainfall amount that Ambo and the southwest monsoon will bring is from 20 to 30 millimeters per hour, which is “heavy,” Pagasa said.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), meanwhile, asked the public to be extra careful.
NDRRMC Benito Ramos said Sunday that five people remain missing, while 16 were injured due to Typhoon Ambo. Radio reports, meanwhile, said two minors were found dead Sunday in Busuanga, Palawan.
The NDRRMC has yet to confirm the report.
