Technology company to run government techno projects
Tuesday, December 14, 2010
MABALACAT — The Technology Resource Center (TRC) will spearhead the country’s drive towards global technological competitiveness and self-sufficiency.
This was announced by TRC Director General Dennis Cunanan during a meeting with local newsmen at a Techno-Center in Mabalacat town on Monday.
Cunanan said the TRC is collaborating with various government agencies and the private sector to come up with Philippine-made train coaches, a monorail system, power-generating windmills and industrial cranes using inexpensive indigenous materials.
According to Cunanan, the project is in accordance with the TRC’s upgraded functions as spelled out by Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Mario Montejo.
Montejo earlier announced that the Department of Science and Technology, (Dost) the TRC’s mother agency, is delving into innovative technology solutions to help boost the economy.
The program, he said, includes the manufacture of mosquito trap to counter the dengue problem, the production of a locally made computer tablet to revolutionize the public education system and the development of a cost-effective health sachet to address the malnutrition problem.
TRC is a government-owned and controlled corporation involved in disseminating livelihood technologies through hands-on training and the publication of its educational booklet and video presentations.
It spearheaded the pivotal projects like the Bio-n organic fertilizer and the promotion of countryside industries through Techno-Centers and its industrial estates in Pampanga, Bataan, Tarlac and Zambales.
Recently, the Dost tasked the TRC to build and operate the Technology Business Incubator in close coordination with other government agencies.
The facility, which is located at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City, is now home to pre-screened young entrepreneurs who venture into open-source technology-oriented businesses.
To bolster their chances of success, the business “incubates” are provided with legal, accounting, marketing and other consultancy services.
To further promote innovation and technology for business and other applications, TRC has also started hosting the annual Technology Partnering Forum since last year.
The event showcases more than 100 successful entrepreneurial ventures and gathers together traders looking for business and technology partners, emerging trends and unique opportunities to improve their existing enterprises.
It also includes a trade fair, technology symposium, and a youth business idea contest.
The TRC’s next Technology Partnering Forum will be held on February 25 to 27 next year at the Megatrade Hall 3 of the SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City.
The event — which is expected to draw thousands of entrepreneurs, technologists, suppliers and business students — will be open to the public. (Reynaldo G. Navales)
