The Mâconnais About Wines from Mâcon Valley of France Best wine supplier in Philippines discusses wine related topics

January 9, 2011

Mâconnais wines are principally dry whites made from the Chardonnay grape, which thrives on the local limestone soils. A small amount of red is also made, most from Gamay but also a tiny amount from Pinot Noir. It is the whites however which are the main focus of interest, and we offer a good selection of Mâconnais whites, including well-known appellations such as Pouilly-Fuissé and Saint Véran, but also wines from the outstanding newly-created appellation of Viré-Clessé, and of course good-value Mâcon-Villages. The growers are all small family-scale businesses, all passionate about quality. Mâconnais wines represent a bit of a bargain – real white Burgundies at a fraction of the cost of those from the northern part of the region. They accompany marvellously fish, poultry, and white meat dishes.

Mâconnais wines

Mâcon-Villages 2005 Domaine Daniel Pollier

Mâcon-Villages from Daniel Pollier is a delight; the wine is from a miniscule vineyard (only 1.1 hectares) at Igé, where young Chardonnay vines grow on chalky soil. Unoaked, it has a pale yellow-green colour, and a nose of fresh ripe fruit and white flowers. The palate is fresh and fruity, with good body and honey & citrus flavours, with just a hint of tropical fruit. Chill to around 13° C and drink with chicken, seafood or fish dishes. Equally good as an aperitif.

Viré-Clessé 2004 La Forétille Domaine des Chazelles Josette & Jean-Noël Chaland

This wine comes from a vineyard in Viré, where vines aged from 40-60 years grow on deep alluvial clay soils. Vinification is carried out at low temperatures. It has a delicate pale gold-green colour, a complex floral bouquet with notes of acacia and lemon, with a full, rich body with pear, honey and citrus flavours. Good attack and structure, rounded, and with a good clean finish and long rich aftertaste. This is the ideal companion for fish, shellfish, poulet à la crème, roast chicken, foie gras, terrines, sweetbreads, andouillettes, and fine cheeses – especially goats cheese. It also makes a splendid apéritif. Best served about 12° C. Drink now to 2010. Grape: Chardonnay.

Viré-Clessé 2003 Le Creusseromme Domaine des Chazelles Josette & Jean-Noël Chaland

Le Creusseromme is a delicious special cuvee from older vines aged on average 60 years, and is aged in oak barrels 2-3 years old. It has a gold-green colour, a bouquet with floral notes of acacia and lemon, yet also with wood and honey evident. A relatively light body, but with good structure and acidity. Rounded, and with a good clean finish and long rich aftertaste. Ideal with fish dishes, especially those in cream sauces, shellfish, chicken roasted and à la crème, foie gras, terrines, and fine cheeses – especially goats cheese. Best served about 13° C, great now and should keep 5+ years from the vintage. Grape: Chardonnay.

Viré-Clessé 2003 Vieilles Vignes Domaine des Chazelles Josette & Jean-Noël Chaland

This is a delicious special cuvee from older vines aged on average 60 years, from a south-easterley facing vineyard located in the commune of Viré, on alluvial clay soils above a rocky chalky subsoil. Vinification is carried out at low temperatures. This wine is unfiltered and may throw a light natural sediment. It has significant depth of flavour, aromas of white flowers (acacia), and of peach, and is a light golden-green colour. Superb with salmon and other cream-based fish dishes, snails, frogs, sweetbreads, chicken roasted or in a cream sauce, and fine cheeses, especially goats cheese. The wine is contained in an antique-style bottle, complete with coat of arms, and a black and gold label. Grape: Chardonnay. Drink now to 2012.

Domaine Daniel Pollier Saint Véran 2005 “En Messie”

This Saint Véran comes from a relatively small vineyard (2.7 hectares) on chalky clay soil in Chasselas in the Saint Véran appellation, with vines aged on average 25 years. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainess steel tanks, followed by maturation in oak for 10 months, with 25% new oak being introduced every year. Floral Acacia-like aromas, a delicate light golden colour, with notes of pear and honey. Grape: Chardonnay.

Domaine Daniel Pollier Pouilly-Fuissé 2005 Vieilles Vignes

This Pouilly-Fuissé from Daniel Pollier comes from a 5 hectare vineyard on chalky clay. The vines are aged on average 40 years, with some parcels as old as 72 years. Following autumn vinification, the wine matures in oak for 10 months – and as with the St. Véran, 25% new oak is introduced every year. A charming golden colour, this subtle wine has great finesse, with nuances of hazlenuts and grilled almonds. The maturation in oak adds honey flavours and hints of toast. You can keep this 6-8 years after the vintage. Of the two Pouilly-Fuissé wines we offer from Daniel Pollier, this one is softer and gentler. Grape: Chardonnay.
