Flagey-Echezeaux
Despite the strong credentials of its vineyards, Flagey-Echezeaux has minimal panache. It suffers in part because of the English-speaking world’s difficulty in pronouncing its name. Also, its Villages and premier cru vineyards are today labeled as Vosne-Romanee (as opposed to Flagey-Echezeaux), which can be somewhat confusing to the beginner. On top of this, historically these same vineyards were considered to be part of Nuits-Saint-Georges. For those unfamiliar with the particularities of Flagey-Echezeaux and its appellations, it is just to examine them more fully. There are two grand crus, Echezaux and Grands-Echezeaux, located at the slope’s mid-point. There are 13.5 hectares of vineyards in Flagey-Echezeaux that are classified as Villages wine. These vineyards are located in two places. The majority are downslope of Echezeaux, with a small percentage near the upslope extremum. These wines are given the appellation Vosne-Romanee, A.C. Above the grand crus are three premier crus: Beaumonts, Les Rouges and Orveaux (total surface area = 11.5 hecatres). They are named Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru. In other words, there is no Flagey-Echezeaux, A.C. or Flagey-Echezeaux 1er Cru: the wines instead use nomenclature that is the same as in neighboring Vosne-Romanee.
