Few of us have the financial resources to incorporate and support a vast number of people in our retreat groups. When you figure that a family typically consists of the husband and wife plus perhaps an average of two children we are looking at a huge number of people. This would necessitate sizable facilities just to house that many people in an emergency, therefore most groups will limit their membership to a maximum of five families.

Every group requires a leader and the leader’s job can be really tough. They must be capable of diplomatically blending a cluster of diverse people into a well oiled machine competent of surviving anything that life throws at them. The leader will need to devote a ample amount of time to the project in order to keep everything on schedule and proceeding as planned.

Speaking of timetables the group will need to establish a schedule for getting all of the necessary tasks taken care of in a coherent manner. This to-do list must be kept to and followed strictly. The leaders will need to synchronize any planning among the various members in order not to duplicate efforts. Each group member should be appointed a separate project and held accountable for its completion. Follow-ups should be conducted on a regular basis by the leader or his representative to guarantee progress is being made with the assignment. Leaders should ensure that each member is becoming an expert at one of the group’s essential tasks and they should report to the group as a whole their progress in what they have learned.

When purchasing supplies for the group those purchases should be reserved for items required specifically by the group as a whole. Personal equipment, etc should be bought by the respective member and not from group funds. Each family should be required to have a specific amount of stored food to ensure that they do not become a burden to the group during hard times. Bulk purchases could be accomplished and divided amongst the members.

In the military we had operating procedures and backup plans in place for every type of potential emergency. This would be a perfect technique to insure that each emergency is covered adequately. In the military it was essential for us to initial the plans, etc to indicate that we had read them and fully understood what they contained. Similarly this can be done for the plans composed by the survival group as well. These plans are vital and of extreme importance since they will enable the group to function even though they may encounter the worst circumstances ever. Lives could be saved with proper plans in place.

The definitive retreat would be for the members to combine their resources and purchase a small farm in some isolated rural area. Along with being available for physical security an emergency farm and land could also serve as recreational locations during the summer for the various members.

An interesting proposal brought up concerning the people who rush from the city to live in the local woods. This theory does not hold water and is actually dangerous. It would take only a few weeks before those people are found dead. Most of the times they do not realize that someone owns the woods that they plan to live in.

Surviving can be done effectively but it takes time and proper planning. Individuals will have a complicated time getting all the necessary work accomplished therefore a small group would be of value in this respect. Having friends and allies is always an asset in emergency conditions.
